Which retro music player app is best?
It depends on the decade you want and where your songs live. REWIND covers the most eras, from a 1968 suitcase record player to early digital players, for files you own. MP95 adds hi-res output. CassoFlow and Tape wrap cassettes around other sources. SepiaPod and MusicPod go for the wheel-style portable look. MD Vinyl is a virtual turntable with album art.
We searched the US App Store for "retro music player", "ipod classic music player" and "winamp ipod style music player" on October 10, 2026 and read every listing we cite. Ratings and prices change often. REWIND is made by the publisher of this site. We say so and list its limits next to everyone else's.

REWIND: the widest range of machines
REWIND offers 30 hand-drawn machines from 1968–2005: 10 pocket cassette players, 2 home decks, 2 boomboxes, 11 portable CD players, 3 turntables and 2 early digital players. Each one moves while your song plays. Reels turn, the tonearm travels across the record, buttons click and pause makes a real tape stop. 17 animated backgrounds react to the music.
What it does not do: stream, play Apple Music or Spotify downloads, or output bit-perfect hi-res audio. Slowed + Reverb, Sped up, reverb depth, 8D audio, the volume boost and most machines are PRO, while 8 machines are free. See every player type and the analog sound controls.
Cassette-themed apps: MP95, CassoFlow, Tape
MP95 pairs a cassette deck with a turntable and a reel-to-reel, and puts sound first with bit-perfect output and USB DAC support, per its listing. CassoFlow offers multiple cassette themes and simulated hiss and wow-flutter, and can pull from self-hosted servers such as Navidrome. Tape is the budget option at $1.99, built around the Apple Music app library. Our best cassette player apps page goes deeper.
Wheel-style players: SepiaPod, MusicPod, ClassicPod
If you remember a click-wheel music player, three apps lean that way. SepiaPod lists wheel and touch controls, album-art browsing and lyrics display. MusicPod lists a click wheel with haptics and works with your device library and imported audio files. ClassicPod is a $0.99 list-style browser whose listing says it plays only music synced to the device, and it was last updated in 2021.
REWIND has no click wheel. Its closest machines are the 1998 flash MP3 player and the 2001 hard-drive player with a joystick, both on the MP3 player page. Read how to get an iPod-style player on iPhone for the honest version of that question.
Turntable and desktop-skin apps
MD Vinyl gives you a virtual turntable and records with album art, and it has a very large rating count. For turntable machines that play your own files, with a linear-tracking arm and scratching, see best vinyl player apps. A Winamp app also exists on the App Store, with a local library, radio and podcasts. Its rating is 3.1 from 95 US ratings, so check recent reviews. Our Winamp alternative page covers the style.
Why do retro music players appeal?
Touch screens flattened music into lists. A cassette has two reels you can watch, a turntable has an arm that travels, and a CD player has a skip button you press on purpose. Retro apps bring some of that back to the phone.
Apps differ in how much they borrow. Some copy only a look over an ordinary library. Others model the mechanics. In REWIND the reels turn while a song plays, the tonearm moves across the record as the song progresses, and a finger can scratch a CD or record. If you want the animation to behave, test a few before you pay.
What should you check before paying for a retro player?
- Where the songs come from. A pretty cassette that only plays the Apple Music library cannot play your MP3 folder, and the reverse is true for file players.
- What happens when you stop paying. Compare subscriptions with one-time options. REWIND has $24.99 once, and CassoFlow sells PRO by subscription or as a $9.99 lifetime purchase.
- How old the listing is. ClassicPod was last updated in 2021, and Solos in January 2025.
- Whether the design works in landscape and with large text, if you need that.
- What the app collects. REWIND's App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected; read the label of every app you try.
Do retro apps work on every iPhone?
Not always. Minimum iOS versions on the listings we read differ widely: ClassicPod lists iOS 9, SepiaPod iOS 15.1, MP95 iOS 15.0, MusicPod iOS 17.0 and CassoFlow iOS 17.6, while REWIND needs iOS 16.4 or later. If you plan to run one on an older phone, read the compatibility line on the App Store page first. Our guide to using an old iPhone as a dedicated player, here, explains how to check what your phone can install.
Also look at screen use. A retro skin is often detailed, and detailed animation costs battery. REWIND offers a night light that dims everything except the machine, and you can switch the haptics and mechanical sounds off if you want a quiet session.
How do you choose?
