A music library for the files you own

REWIND's library imports your own audio from the Files app, either a whole folder or single tracks. It reads tags and cover art, and supports search, favorites, shuffle and repeat. Supported types are MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and CAF.

A music library for the files you own

How do I import music?

Use the Files app integration. You can pick a whole folder or select individual tracks. REWIND copies the files into the app, so they keep playing even if you remove the originals from their source folder.

  1. Get your files onto the iPhone: iCloud Drive, AirDrop, a computer transfer or a download from Safari.
  2. Open REWIND and choose to import.
  3. Pick a folder, or select individual tracks.
  4. Wait for the copy to finish; the songs appear in your library.

What file types work?

REWIND plays MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and CAF. Each has its own page: MP3, AAC and M4A, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF and CAF.

Other types, such as OGG, Opus, DSD, APE and WMA, are not supported. Convert them first if you need them.

If you are unsure what a file is, look at its extension in the Files app: .mp3, .m4a, .flac, .wav, .aif or .aiff, and .caf are all fine.

What about iCloud files that are not downloaded?

Files stored only in iCloud may not be on the phone yet. REWIND reports those so you can download them first, then import again. This keeps the library honest about what can actually play offline.

Tags, cover art and search

Titles, artists and cover art are read from the tags inside your files. Clean tags give you a clean library; a file with no tags shows up with what the app can find. The built-in search looks across your library, favorites keep the songs you love close, and shuffle and repeat (queue or one track) work as you expect.

Cover art also reaches the lock screen. See lock screen controls.

From library to machine

Any track can play on any machine. Tap a song, pick a machine from the catalog, and the library keeps feeding it. Put songs together into mixtapes, and shape the sound with the equalizer or analog sound.

What you cannot import

Streaming downloads from Apple Music or Spotify are DRM-protected and will not import. DRM-free music works: purchases downloaded as files, Bandcamp downloads and your own CD rips. Read where to buy DRM-free music and why Apple Music songs won't import.

Organizing a big collection

A folder per album imports cleanly, and an album folder with proper tags becomes easy to find with search. If you have a mix of old rips and new downloads, fix titles and artists in your computer's tag editor before importing, because REWIND shows what the files say.

Favorites help when the collection grows. Mark the songs you play most, then use shuffle across them. For short sets, use a mixtape instead.

Imported files are copies, so they take space on the iPhone. Compressed types such as MP3 and AAC are small; uncompressed WAV and AIFF are large. If storage is tight, keep the lossless masters on a computer and carry AAC/M4A or MP3 copies.
