Why make a retro music player?
Music used to have a body. You pressed a key, a motor started, the reels turned and the counter rolled. Streaming made listening easier and also flatter. REWIND brings the physical part back for the songs you already own, without asking for an account or your data.
How the machines are made
- Each machine is drawn by hand as vector art in the style of hardware from its year, with no brand names or logos.
- Moving parts follow the song: reels turn, tape moves from one reel to the other, tonearms travel across the record, meters and speakers react to the music.
- Mechanical sounds such as key clicks, motor hum and tape stop are synthesized on the iPhone, not recorded samples.
How the guides are written
Guides cover the history and technology of cassettes, vinyl, CD and MP3 players, plus practical help with music files on iPhone. Claims about REWIND describe only what the current version of the app does.
