What does the reel-to-reel machine do?
The 1974 machine shows the tape through three windows in each aluminum reel. The tape runs past a black head-block cover, guide rollers, tension arms and a pinch roller, and moves from the left reel to the right as the song plays.
A big chrome knob is play and pause, two chrome levers are REW and F.FWD, and a PAUSE lever, a POWER key and a mechanical tape counter complete the top. Controls click down, and the two VU meters marked LEFT and RIGHT move to the music.
How does it fit with the rest of the catalog?
In the app catalog it belongs to the Decks group, together with the cassette deck. It plays the same library as the pocket cassette players.
What sound does it have?
