The ’74 Reel: walnut, aluminum reels and twin VU meters

What was a home reel-to-reel in 1974?

In the 1970s a reel-to-reel was the serious home recorder. Wide tape at high speed gave better sound than a cassette, and people recorded records, radio and family parties on 7-inch reels. The machines were heavy, with big levers and meters, and threading the tape through the heads was part of the ritual.

What do you see on the ’74 Reel?

Walnut side panels hold a brushed aluminum top panel. Two large aluminum 7-inch reels sit on it, each with three windows through which you see the tape. As the song plays the tape moves from the left reel to the right one. Between them are a black head-block cover, guide rollers, tension arms and a pinch roller.

The lower black strip carries the REC and PHONE jacks, two MIC–LINE knobs, MONITOR and EQ toggles and two VU meters marked LEFT and RIGHT. Their needles move to the music, so the machine looks alive even on quiet passages. Chrome feet finish the case.

What do you press on the ’74 Reel?

A big chrome knob is play and pause. Two chrome levers, REW and F.FWD, wind the tape, and a PAUSE lever sits beside them. Further along are a red REC lamp, a POWER key, MIC jacks and a mechanical tape counter. The controls click like the real thing, and the mechanical sounds and haptics can be switched off in Settings.

Which sound settings suit the ’74 Reel?

Use saturation at medium for the soft ceiling tape had, keep wobble very low and hiss subtle. The Warm equalizer preset gives the round low end. The VU background echoes the meters on the machine.

Is the 1974 Reel-to-Reel free or PRO?

The ’74 Reel is the oldest tape machine in the set. It belongs to REWIND PRO: weekly $2.99, yearly $19.99 with a 3-day free trial, or lifetime $24.99 once. Without PRO you still get 8 machines, plus analog sound and the equalizer on all of them.
