What did a 1995 cassette player feel like?
In 1995 the cassette was still everywhere, even as the CD overtook it in sales, and a personal tape player in a jacket pocket was ordinary kit for students and commuters. Metal-look casings, rubbery buttons and auto-reverse were the selling points. Portable CD players were spreading, but tapes were cheaper and survived being dropped.
What is on screen with the ’95 Tape?
The chassis is silver, with the cassette sitting in the middle of the plate. Its reels are copper-colored with six spokes, and a pack of brown tape wraps each one. At the top the tape forms loops, and at the bottom you can see the head and the pinch rollers. The reels and tape packs animate as the song plays.
The two reels do not turn at the same speed. As the song plays, one pack shrinks and the other grows, so the proportions give away roughly how far along you are.
- Reels turn while a track plays

- A ribbon of years switches machines fast
Which sound settings go with the ’95 Tape?
Start with tape saturation around the middle and wobble low. That gives the soft edge of a well-used tape without making vocals seasick. Add a little hiss if the song is quiet. Pair it with the Warm or Vocal equalizer preset. For a cleaner listen, switch analog sound off and the machine keeps its looks.
Is the 1995 Cassette Player free or PRO?
Because it is the default, the ’95 Tape is the first thing you see after install. It is one of the 8 free machines, so you can install REWIND, import your files and play on it without buying anything. Analog sound and the equalizer are free on every machine, including this one.
