The ’78 Deck: walnut sides, piano keys and amber VU meters

What was a hi-fi cassette deck in 1978?

By 1978 the cassette had grown up. Better tape and better decks made it a serious home format. A deck sat in a hi-fi stack next to the amplifier and turntable and was used to record records and radio. Meters and a tape counter helped you set levels and find songs. See the history of the cassette.

What do you see on the ’78 Deck?

On top, a smoked lid lets you see the cassette. Your song title is on the label, a “60” sits on an orange band, the spools turn and the tape winds from one to the other. Walnut side panels frame the case.

The black panel has MIC and PHONES jacks, two large amber backlit VU meters with needles, a PEAK LEVEL LED and the words STEREO CASSETTE DECK. Five level sliders sit below: MIC L and R, LINE L and R, and OUT.

Which keys and levers does the ’78 Deck have?

A silver strip of gray piano keys carries EJECT, REC, ◀◀, ▶, ▶▶, STOP and PAUSE, with labels printed under them. Next to them are a mechanical counter with a RESET button, BIAS and EQ levers and an AUTO STOP switch. Press play and the key clicks down while the spools turn and the counter climbs.

Which sound settings suit the ’78 Deck?

A good deck sounded smooth with a gentle top end. Set saturation medium, wobble low and hiss very low. The Warm equalizer preset or Vocal work well. Use the vu background to match the needles.

Is the 1978 Cassette Deck free or PRO?

The ’78 Deck belongs to REWIND PRO: weekly $2.99, yearly $19.99 with a 3-day free trial, or lifetime $24.99 once. Without PRO you still get 8 machines, plus analog sound and the equalizer on all of them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ’78 Deck free?

No. It needs REWIND PRO.

Does the REC key record?

No. It is part of the drawn keys. REWIND plays your own files and does not record.

Yes. The two amber meters have needles that move to the music.

Is pause a real tape stop?

Yes. Pausing slides the pitch down like a tape slowing to a halt.
