What does VLC do better?

VLC covers jobs REWIND does not try to do. It plays video, handles subtitles, streams from home servers and cloud drives, and can render to Chromecast, according to its App Store listing. It is free, open source and cross-platform. If one app has to play every kind of file you own, VLC is the safer choice. Its listing also names playback speed control, while REWIND's Slowed and Sped up change pitch together with speed.

VLC also lists more interface languages: 48 on its US App Store page against 13 in REWIND. The listing shows about 3.7 stars from roughly 6,000 US ratings (October 2026).

What does REWIND do better?

REWIND is built for one thing and dresses it up. A reel-to-reel machine moves tape from one reel to the other as the song plays. A turntable's tonearm crosses the record. Buttons click down with haptics, and a pause makes the pitch slide like a real tape stop. Tape mechanics covers how it works.

The sound has an analog character you can dial in, 17 music-reactive backgrounds, and handwritten mixtape labels. VLC's listing mentions none of these. REWIND also works with no network at all and collects no data.

Who should pick which?

  • Choose VLC if you need video, subtitles, NAS or cloud streaming, or a free open-source tool.
  • Choose REWIND if you only listen to music files and want the experience to feel physical.
  • Keep both: VLC for movies and server shares, REWIND for the music folder you love.
