How to Play Music Offline on Your iPhone
You can play music offline on an iPhone in two ways: download tracks inside a streaming app, or keep your own audio files on the phone and play them with a local player. Streaming downloads need a subscription and can expire. Files you own keep working without any network.

What are the ways to listen offline?
There are two main ways, and they differ in who controls the music.
Streaming downloads store encrypted copies inside the streaming app. They need an active subscription, and the app usually has to check in with its server now and then. Owned files are ordinary MP3, M4A or FLAC files saved on the phone, and no one can revoke them. Podcasts and audiobooks are a third kind of offline audio, but only if the episodes were downloaded beforehand.
| Streaming downloads | Files you own | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a subscription | Yes | No |
| Can expire or disappear | Yes, if licenses change | No |
| Works in any player app | No, only inside the service's app | Yes |
| Cost per song | Included in the fee | Paid once, or free if you ripped your own |
| Works in airplane mode | Yes, if downloaded | Yes |
Why do owned files stay reliable?
An MP3 on your phone is just data. It plays today and will keep playing in ten years, in any app that understands the format. MP3 has been an ISO standard since 1993 (Wikipedia: MP3), and AAC and FLAC are also widely supported.
A DRM-protected track is different, because the file is tied to an account and a service. That is why Apple Music songs won't import into other players, and why the DRM page exists.
How do you set up offline playback with your own files?
The setup is a one-time job.
- Choose your files: music you bought as downloads, CD rips, or tracks from artists who sell files directly.
- Get them into the Files app on the phone. The routes are in how to add music files to iPhone.
- Import them into REWIND. The app copies the files into itself, so you can later delete the originals from iCloud without losing them in the player.
- Turn on airplane mode as a test and press play. If music runs, you are done.
Does REWIND really need no network?
Playback does not. The sounds of the mechanics are synthesized on the phone, the analog effects run in real time, and there are no ads or analytics to load. The network is used only to download the app from the App Store and to load prices on the purchase screen. The App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected".
Background playback works, with lock screen, Control Center and headphone controls (see lock screen controls). More on the idea in offline music player.
A related benefit is predictability. A local player does not buffer, does not drop a track because a license changed, and does not stop when a train enters a tunnel. If you have ever lost a song mid-chorus because the signal dropped, you know why people keep a folder of files for the road.
What should you check before a long trip?
Run through a short list the night before, because an airplane is a poor place to discover a missing file.
- Open the library and confirm the albums you want are there.
- Look for any iCloud placeholders. REWIND reports files that are not downloaded.
- Play one track from each album for a few seconds.
- Set the sleep timer to 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes if you listen to fall asleep.
- Use the night light if you will play in a dark cabin: the screen stays on and everything except the machine dims.
Which option is better for you?
If you already pay for a streaming service and listen to new releases, keep it. Use its downloads for the trip and a local player for the albums you own. If your listening is built around a collection that you do not want tied to a subscription, owned files are the stable base.
REWIND is a free download with an in-app purchase, so you can try the offline workflow with 8 machines before you pay for anything. Details are on the pricing page.
There is also a middle path. Many people keep a streaming subscription for discovery and buy the albums they fall in love with as files. Over time the owned part grows into a library that no catalog change can touch.
What about podcasts and audiobooks?
Spoken-word apps have their own download systems. Podcast apps let you download episodes ahead of time. Live radio needs a connection by definition.
REWIND is built for music. A spoken-word file in a supported format will play, and the sleep timer (15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes) helps if you listen in bed, but the app has no pitch-preserving speed control for speech.
How do you keep storage under control?
Offline music takes space, and space on a phone is finite. As a rough guide, an MP3 or AAC song at common quality takes a few megabytes, and a lossless song takes several times that. A thousand lossless songs can fill tens of gigabytes.
Check the iPhone Storage screen in iOS Settings before a big import. If space is short, import compressed copies of casual listening and keep lossless for the albums you care about. Because REWIND copies imported files into itself, you can delete the originals from the Files app once you are happy. Keep a backup on a computer first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play Spotify or Apple Music songs in another app offline?
No. Those downloads are DRM-protected and only play inside the service's own app.
Does REWIND play music in airplane mode?
Yes. Playback needs no network connection once your files are imported.
Will deleting the file from iCloud remove it from REWIND?
REWIND copies imported files into the app, so the imported copy stays available.
How much storage do I need for offline music?
It depends on the format. Compressed MP3 or AAC is small, while lossless FLAC or ALAC albums can take several hundred megabytes each.
