What was cassette tech in 1997?
By 1997 the cassette had been refined for thirty years. Chrome and metal tape types gave a brighter, quieter recording than ordinary ferric tape, and some players let you pick the tape type with a small switch. CD burners were still rare and costly, so people kept taping from CDs onto cassettes for the car and the pocket.
What does the SX41 look like?
The cassette is dark with gray stripes on the label. A smoky window shows tiny chrome hubs and a graduated scale. Chrome staple-shaped guides curve around the bottom of the chassis. The keys come in gray, cream, cream and sage, and to their left sit two little slide switches.
The reel packs move as the music plays, and the year ’97 is printed on the acrylic plate.
- Two slide switches next to the keys
- Chrome hubs behind smoked plastic
- Swipe the cassette to wind
- Keys click and buzz if haptics are on
Which sound settings suit the SX41?
A high-position tape had less noise than ordinary tape, so keep hiss very low and wobble modest. A little saturation still warms the mids. The Air equalizer preset adds the sparkle that chrome tape was known for, and Flat keeps a well-mastered song honest.
Is the 1997 Cassette Player free or PRO?
The SX41 is the gentlest of the tape machines to listen through. It is one of the 8 free machines, so you can install REWIND, import your files and play on it without buying anything. Analog sound and the equalizer are free on every machine, including this one.
