REWIND vs the Apple Music app: streaming or your own files?
The Apple Music app streams over 100 million songs for a monthly subscription. REWIND is a free-to-download player for audio files you already own, shown on retro machines. They solve different problems, and you can keep both on one iPhone.

Are REWIND and Apple Music competitors?
Only partly. Apple Music is a streaming service with an app. REWIND is an offline player for MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and CAF files that you import from the Files app. If you want to hear a song you do not own, you need a streaming service. If you want your own rips, purchases and downloads to look like a cassette or turntable, you need a player like REWIND.
Competitor facts on this page were checked on October 10, 2026 against the App Store listing and the developer's own site. Apps change, so verify before you buy.

What does the Apple Music app do better?
Everything that depends on a catalog. Its listing advertises unlimited access to over 100 million songs, personal playlists and stations, beat-by-beat lyrics, lossless and Spatial Audio, SharePlay, CarPlay and Apple Watch features. REWIND has no streaming, no recommendations and no social features.
It also has the larger audience: the US App Store shows about 4.85 stars from over three million ratings (October 2026). REWIND launches in 2026 and has no ratings history yet.
What does REWIND do better?
REWIND turns playback into something you can touch. Swipe a cassette to wind it, put a finger on a record to scratch it, spin the wheel of an early MP3 player. Pausing makes a real tape stop, and every click and motor sound is synthesized on the device. The catalog has 30 machines across 1968–2005, with 8 free.
It also costs nothing per month. Free forever covers 8 machines, 7 backgrounds, analog sound and the equalizer, one mixtape and lock-screen controls. REWIND collects no data and needs no network for playback. See the offline music player page for how that works.
Can REWIND play my Apple Music songs?
No. Apple Music streaming tracks are DRM-protected and cannot be imported into any third-party player, including REWIND. Songs you bought as DRM-free files, Bandcamp downloads and your own CD rips do work. The page on DRM-protected music and the guide to why Apple Music songs will not import explain the details, and where to buy DRM-free music lists options.
Who should pick which?
- Use the Apple Music app if you stream, want discovery, lyrics and a huge catalog.
- Use REWIND if you own a library of files and want playback that feels like hardware.
- Use both: stream in Apple Music, and keep a folder of owned files for REWIND.

No. REWIND is a free download with optional PRO. PRO is $2.99 weekly, $19.99 yearly with a 3-day trial, or $24.99 once.
Is Apple Music free?
