What did 2001 pocket players offer?
Around 2001 small hard drives let a pocket player hold hundreds of songs. These players were chunky bricks, often wrapped in rubber bumpers, with a backlit screen and a small pad for steering through the list. Ripping a CD collection to files became a weekend hobby. See the story in our MP3 player history.
What do you touch on the ’01 Brick?
The body is silver and sits inside dark rubber corner bumpers. The monochrome LCD has a blue backlight and shows the track number, title, artist, a progress bar and the time. Under it are three small keys, F1, F2 and F3, and a round joystick pad. Push the pad left for the previous track and right for the next one, and press the center for play and pause. A red OFF key works as stop. A small LED blinks when the hard drive is being accessed, and the front is printed with “20 GB”.

Which sound settings suit the ’01 Brick?
This is a digital machine, so keep hiss, wobble and crackle at zero. Use the equalizer as the character control: Warm for older rips, Bass for hip-hop and Air for crisp guitars. The ’01 era goes well with the scope or synth backgrounds.
Is the 2001 Hard-Drive Player free or PRO?
The ’01 Brick belongs to REWIND PRO: weekly $2.99, yearly $19.99 with a 3-day free trial, or lifetime $24.99 once. Without PRO you still get 8 machines, plus analog sound and the equalizer on all of them.
