The ’68 suitcase: a portable record player in red leatherette

What was a portable record player in 1968?

In 1968 a suitcase record player was how teenagers heard music away from the family hi-fi. Closed up it looked like a small travel case, and opened it held a turntable, an amplifier and a speaker. Singles in paper sleeves were the currency, and a speed lever covered 16, 33, 45 and 78 rpm. The sound was thin, loud and perfect for a bedroom party.

What do you see and touch on the ’68 Case?

You look down into the open case. The lid is tilted back, with a tight cloth grille inside a chrome edge. The deck below is red leatherette with a cream panel, a record on a rubber mat, and a single beside it. A flat cream tonearm rests on the arm rest, with VOLUME and TONE knobs and a lever marked 16, 33, 45 and 78. Below the case on the acrylic plate runs a row of keys.

The record spins and the tonearm travels across the grooves as the song plays. Put a finger on the record to scratch.

  • Cloth speaker grille in the lid
  • Flat cream tonearm that tracks the song
  • Speed lever: 16, 33, 45, 78
  • Rubber mat and a single record

Which sound settings suit the ’68 Case?

This machine wants vinyl crackle, set medium to high. Add a little wobble for a slightly off-center platter, and a touch of saturation to fatten it. Leave hiss low, since the noise on a record is crackle, not tape hiss. The Warm equalizer preset gives the small-speaker feel, and Slowed + Reverb (PRO) is a nice match for late nights.

Is the 1968 Record Player free or PRO?

The ’68 Case is the oldest machine in REWIND. It belongs to REWIND PRO: weekly $2.99, yearly $19.99 with a 3-day free trial, or lifetime $24.99 once. Without PRO you still get 8 machines, plus analog sound and the equalizer on all of them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ’68 Case free?

No. It needs REWIND PRO.

Does it change speed with the lever?

The lever is part of the drawing. For speed changes use Slowed (−15%) or Sped up (+20%), two PRO switches that move the pitch with the speed. Reverb depth is adjustable.

Can I add vinyl crackle to any track?

Yes. The crackle slider is part of the analog sound settings, and it works on any imported file.
